The Clown of Aleppo: A Bright Spot with a Dark End

A 24-year-old Syrian man who decided to stay behind as a volunteer is now dead because of the ongoing violence. Anas al-Basha, a former centre director for the civil society group, Space of Hope, was killed by a recent airstrike. The government lead forces have been pounding this part of Aleppo as part of an assault to take parts of the city back. Al-Basha decided to stay behind as a volunteer because he believed it was important to bring hope to the children and people of Syria. He did this through his portrayal of a clown.

“‘He lived to make children laugh and happy in the darkest most dangerous place,’ Mahmoud al-Basha, who identified himself as Anas’ brother, wrote on Facebook.”
