Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Trump would be a natural ally if he is able to hold up to his campaign promises. Trump has pledged throughout his campaign to be a fighter of terrorism throughout the middle east. With the conflict continuing to rage on, there will be plenty of opportunities for Trump to have an effect on the situation. While Assad hopes for an ally in Trump, he said he is not sure whether or not the man will live up to his promises. The current US policy in Syria is to strike against ISIS and other jihadists while also supporting moderate rebels who are opposed to President Assad.
“Speaking to Portugal’s RTP state television, Mr Assad said: ‘We cannot tell anything about what he’s going to do, but if… he is going to fight the terrorists, of course we are going to be [an] ally, natural ally in that regard with the Russians, with the Iranians, with many other countries.'”
